USAID/Paraguay’s current Environmental Objective is
to support sustainable management of these globally significant
ecoregions and integrate efforts with Argentina, Bolivia,
and Brazil by strengthening Paraguayan NGOs, civil society
organizations (CSOs), and municipal and departmental governments
so they possess the skills required for competent participation
in these efforts; and provide assistance in the development
of financial, legal and environmental policies that protect
ecologically sensitive areas.
USAID’s current objectives in this sector are based
on its past assistance to support the implementation of
Paraguay’s National System of Protected Areas by increasing
protection mechanisms of key public or private environmentally
sensitive areas, provides training to key stakeholders in
a wide range of environmental aspects and helps strengthen
environmental NGOs in mobilizing efforts for conservation
on a regional scale.
Main results have been development of an eco-regional management
plan for each ecoregion. These plans were developed in a
participatory manner and identifies specific actions and
sets viable recommendations needed to address environmental
threats while integrating social economic benefits.
Finally, USAID is providing the Government of Paraguay
with technical assistance in order to comply with international
conventions, to analyze and identify gaps and redundancies
in Paraguay’s environmental legal framework, set forth
recommendations to optimize it and develop new legal tools.
