The original forest of the Upper Paraná Atlantic
Forest ecoregion covered the largest area (approximately 400,000
km2) of all the ecoregions of the Atlantic Forest complex,
extending from the western slopes of the Serra do Mar in Brazil
to eastern Paraguay and the Province of Misiones of Argentina.
Today, only around 7,8% of the original forest cover still
remains in dispersed fragments.
Of the three countries that share this ecoregion, Paraguay
retains a large area but, it is only 13.4% of the original
area in the country.
Deforestation in Paraguay, one of the highest rates of any
country in Latin America, has fragmented the remaining forest.
The two largest forest remnants in Paraguay are the Mbaracayu
Private Reserve and Management Resource Area San Rafael.
Immediate and well-coordinated conservation action is required
to save these and other important forest remnants.
